mermaidsMitigation of microplastics impact caused by textile washing processes

The main objective of the project is to contribute to the mitigation of the impact caused by micro and/or nanoplastic particles resulting from laundry waste water on European seas’ ecosystems, by demonstrating and implementing innovative technologies and additives for laundry processes and textile finishing treatments. Policy recommendations will be set in order to promote the widespread implementation of technologies that will contribute to reach a Good Environmental Status (GES) by 2020.

LEITAT’s role in the project:LEITAT will provide a mapping and estimation of domestic and industrial laundry effluent microplastic release together with an analysis of national, regional and international, regulatory framework. Moreover, LEITAT will contribute in providing technical assistance to develop innovative textile treatments, detergent additives and washing recommendations to avoid garments’ microplastic removal in laundry processes.

A full comprehensive Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) study and a socio-economic impact assessment by means of Life Cycle Cost will be carried out by LEITAT.

Good practices guidelines will be developed for different target audiences (including industry, consumers and policy makers).
