The decrease in water consumption for agriculture  and the minimizing of the impact that this region has on the environment are the main objectives of this project. In 2006, groundwater and surface water extraction in the EU was about 38,900 million m3 (Eurostat, 2006). In recent years, 41.4% of the territory of the EU27 has been declared as nitrate vulnerable zones (Eurostat,  2006), as a direct result of pressure from farming on the environment.

 

LEITAT’s role in the project:

  • For the preliminary work LEITAT:  Action leader, Getting all the necessary permits to implement the prototype, Support on legislation and policies research acknowledgment.
  • Study of the pilot plants location: All the lab analysis to stick up to the analytical plan. Characterization of all key parameters to provide useful data for prototype’s design and build up.
  • Prototype’s design and build up: Start up lab analysis. Technical support. Start up and validation of the prototype. Chemical analysis for water quality monitoring. Determination analysis for process monitoring and validation of the system performance.  Validation of the field production quality using regenerated water.  Chemical analysis for water quality monitoring. Determination analysis for process monitoring and validation of the system performance. Analysis of potential pollutants.
  • Economical, technical and environmental assessment: Gathering and treatment of all the analytical data;LCA development and execution.
