The SMARTERSHIELD project will contribute to eliminate the hazards associated with the existence of ice on a lifting or stabilizing surface. The ice accretion increases the aircraft weight, which combined with the reduction of lift, can imply an important increase of the necessary energy to lift the aircraft. SMARTERSHIELD will consider all the possible innovative technologies and concepts that could be useful to accomplish a high efficient new smart erosion shield.

 

LEITAT’s role in the project: Coordinator

  • WP1: Establishment of detailed specifications (detailed mechanical, functional, aeronautical and environmental criteria), New concepts review (propose, design and investigate new concepts of erosion shield systems), Design and evaluation of new concepts (analyze and optimize the previously selected technologies and concepts); Design optimization and Detail design.
  • WP2:  Modelling of erosion shield designs (carry out Finite Element –FE- models for the design concepts and of the prototype scale design); level 1 and 2 simulations, Model correlations (correlate and adjust the Finite Element model to maximize its accuracy and reliability)
  • WP3: Manufacturing and assembly of erosion shield mock-ups; Testing and validation of design concepts; Manufacturing and assembly of erosion shield prototype; Testing and validation of erosion shield prototype.
