This project focuses on innovations of battery anode, cathode, electrolyte materials and technologies, as well as assembly of batteries cells which are crucial on battery performance, cost and environmental impact.

Improvement of lifetime and cyclability of Li-air batteries through finding highly active bifunctional catalysts to effectively regenerate batteries, protecting the Li anode from dendrites formation using suitable membranes and obtaining stable electrolyte with additives to render solubility of Li2O2 that blogs on cathode will be studied.

 

LEITAT’s role in the project: Synthesis of nanostructure lithium metal nanorod by electro-deposition onto removable scaffold of conductive polymer, including the modification of LISICON layers.: Synthesis and characterization of nano-structured meseporous carbon materials as supporting materials to disperse noble metal catalysts. Synthesis and characterization of nano-structured M-doped MnOx/C (where M=Co or Pd) as well as the investigation on PtAu/C catalysts with improved cycle life and specific capacity of cell. Synthesis and optimization of other types of RTILs system to get the optimum solvent in terms of oxygen solubility and capacity. Evaluation of physical properties of RTILs solvent (such as temperature to actuate by heating or cooling the battery cells depending on environmental conditions), as well as the filling amount and conditions etc. in terms of the oxygen solubility and ion conductivity.

LEITAT could characterize battery cells performance (nominal voltage, cut-off charge and discharge voltage, reversible capacity, cycle life, charge/discharge current rates, energy and power capability, DOD, self-discharge, working temperature etc.) to develop an electric model for Matlab environment.
